Parent Infant Research Institute (PIRI) Expanding perinatal depression screening into actionable care

About PIRIMID

PIRIMID is a digital clinical decision support system designed by the Parent-Infant Research Institute (PIRI) to bridge the gap between perinatal depression and screening and effective care.

Its evidence-based decision tree integrates screening results with clinical information, ensuring adherence to national perinatal mental health guidelines and facilitating referrals to evidence-based treatments.

This approach enables clinicians to combine EPDS results with their own assessments, creating a structured management plan tailored to each client’s needs.

Digital screening tools included in PIRIMID

EPDS

The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a 10 item self-report questionnaire developed and validated to assist primary care health professionals in detecting expectant and new mothers at risk of or experiencing symptoms of perinatal anxiety and depression.

ANRQ / PNRQ

The Antenatal Risk Questionnaire and Postnatal Risk Questionnaire is a self-report psychosocial assessment tool that helps to identify expectant and new parents who may be at risk of developing perinatal mental health issues.

PIRIMID

PIRIMID integrates the EPDS scores, clinical data, and guidelines to deliver tailored management plans and care pathways, including e-mental health treatments.

Research & partnerships

PIRIMID has undergone a cluster randomised controlled trial in partnership with organisations like Beyond Blue and PANDA, demonstrating its effectiveness in facilitating treatment uptake following perinatal depression screening.

PIRIMID screening process

Screen

Patients receive a secure link via SMS or QR code to complete a screening questionnaire on their personal device, designed to be user-friendly for improved engagement and accuracy.

Integrate

The results are instantly generated into a report, seamlessly integrating with existing clinical workflows. These summary reports support clinicians in efficiently assessing patient needs and determining appropriate next steps.

Connect

Based on the screening results in the summary report, health professionals can engage in targeted discussions and follow referral pathways.
